What is a Naming Ceremony?
A Naming Ceremony is a meaningful alternative to a traditional christening, ideal for families who prefer a non-religious or lightly spiritual celebration. It centres around your child and the loved ones who support them, allowing you to create a ceremony that is personal, heartfelt, and unique. Naming Ceremonies can be held for babies, adopted children, or stepchildren of any age, making it a flexible and inclusive celebration.
How Does a Naming Ceremony Work?
Every Naming Ceremony is unique and tailored entirely to your family’s wishes. Without being bound by religious tradition, you have the freedom to design a ceremony that reflects your values and your child’s personality. Common elements often include symbolic rituals such as signing a certificate, hand or footprints, sand ceremonies, or tree planting — and you are welcome to invent your own meaningful ritual.
Typically lasting 20-30 minutes, Naming Ceremonies are kept short and sweet, especially to keep younger children happy and engaged. You also have full control over the theme, venue, and location. There are no legal restrictions on where the ceremony can take place, so options range from homes and gardens to hotels, farms, zoos, or even train stations.
You may choose to appoint special adults as ‘Godparents’, ‘Guideparents’, or ‘Sparents’ — or any other titles meaningful to you. The ceremony is completely flexible and personalised.
