Naming Ceremonies in Scotland

A gentle, personal way to welcome someone new into your family

Welcoming a child into the world is something truly special. A naming ceremony is a gentle way to pause, gather the people who matter most, and celebrate that moment together.

It doesn’t follow a set format or tradition. Instead, it reflects your family, your values, and the kind of welcome you want to create.

What a naming ceremony can include

Every ceremony is different, but it might include:

  • Readings or poems chosen by family and friends
  • Promises or commitments made to your child
  • The involvement of siblings or wider family
  • Music that feels meaningful to you
  • A simple symbolic moment, if that feels right

There’s no pressure for it to be anything more than what feels natural.

A calm, personal approach

My role is simply to guide things gently and create a ceremony that feels relaxed, warm and completely your own.

There’s no need to perform, or follow a sset cript. We take our time, shape it together, and let it unfold in a way that feels comfortable for everyone involved.

A small note from me

Although I mainly work with couples creating wedding ceremonies, I also love being party of these quieter family moments.

There’s something really special about them. They’re simple, genuine, and full of meaning in a different kind of way.

As an agnostic celebrant with Open Beliefs Scotland, I can include religion or spirituality in the ceremony to reflect your beliefs and values, or it can be completely non religious. The ceremony should be personal to you, your child and reflect your wishes.

If you’re considering a naming ceremony and want something that feels relaxed, personal and genuinely yours, I’d love to hear your plans.
